Imbolc in the Southern Hemisphere: Welcoming the Return of the Sun

As winter begins to slowly loosen its grip, Imbolc marks an important turning point in the seasonal cycle. Traditionally celebrated around the halfway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox, Imbolc is a time to notice the subtle signs that the seasons are beginning to shift.

Here in the Southern Hemisphere, Imbolc falls at the beginning of August, a time when we are still feeling the depths of winter but where the days are gradually becoming longer, the sun is returning with more warmth, and we start to look ahead to the brighter months. We had our first camillia blooms greet us this morning (Aug 1st) and it was a beautiful sunny day, so inspiring for a little bit of spring cleaning or imbolc cleaning around the house and garden.

Nature rarely changes overnight. Instead, the signs arrive slowly, a little more light in the morning, longer afternoons, the first hints of new growth and the feeling that winter is beginning to move towards spring.
