Sacred Lotus Flower – Sacred Herb

The sacred lotus has been held in deep regard for thousands of years and carries rich symbolism across Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Rising from muddy water to open into a beautiful flower above the surface, the lotus has long represented the ability to rise beyond difficulty, along with purity, wisdom, renewal and spiritual awakening.

In Hindu traditions, the lotus is closely associated with several deities, including Lakshmi, Saraswati and Brahma, and is often depicted as a symbol of beauty, creation, abundance and divine knowledge.

The lotus holds an equally important place in Buddhist traditions. The Buddha is frequently depicted seated upon a lotus, while the flower itself represents the journey from the difficulties of ordinary life towards greater wisdom and enlightenment. The lotus became a defining symbol in Buddhist art and appears throughout Buddhist temples, sculpture and religious imagery.

The flower is also strongly associated with Tara, the revered female figure of Vajrayana Buddhism. Tara is often depicted holding a lotus or seated upon a lotus throne. White Tara, in particular, is traditionally shown with the lotus, while Green Tara is also frequently represented seated upon one. The lotus in Tara's imagery reflects her associations with compassion, wisdom and protection.

Beyond any single religion, the lotus has become a lasting symbol of the relationship between earth, water and renewal. Its journey from the depths of muddy water to a flower held above the surface is perhaps what has given it such enduring meaning across cultures.

Dried lotus flowers can be used in incense blends, traditional magical practices and as a botanical addition to collections of herbs and flowers. Their delicate form also makes them particularly beautiful for seasonal and ceremonial use.
